A chess thinking process is not a formula that produces the best move. It is a way to direct your attention so that important information is less likely to be missed.

Without a process, players often alternate between two modes: playing the first move that looks natural and calculating one idea for too long. A practical process helps you understand the position, generate alternatives, and test your preferred move against resistance.

The five-step chess thinking process

1. Ask what changed

Begin with the opponent's last move. Do not immediately search for your own idea. Ask:

  • What does the move attack or defend?
  • Which line, square, or piece became available?
  • Did any piece become loose or overloaded?
  • What threat would the opponent play next if you passed?

This prevents you from using an outdated picture of the position. Many blunders begin when a player continues an old plan after the position has changed.

2. Check forcing moves for both sides

Look at checks, captures, and direct threats. Start with the opponent's resources when their last move was forcing or when your king and pieces are exposed.

You are not trying to calculate every possible sequence. You are making sure that a tactical fact does not make strategic planning irrelevant.

3. Generate a small set of candidate moves

Candidate moves give your calculation a clear starting point. In a typical position, two or three serious candidates are enough:

  • a forcing move that must be checked;
  • a move that improves your worst-placed piece or solves a problem;
  • a move that advances your plan or restricts the opponent's plan.

The categories are prompts, not rules. Sometimes one candidate is obviously necessary. Sometimes a complicated position deserves more. The goal is to avoid comparing one move with nothing.

4. Test the idea from the opponent's side

For each serious candidate, state the idea in plain language: “I want to trade this defender,” “I want to occupy the open file,” or “I want to win this pawn.”

Then ask what the opponent would do if they understood your idea. Look for their most forcing reply, not the reply that makes your plan work. This is where many attractive moves fail.

5. Make a final safety check

Before moving, look at the board again rather than only at the line in your head:

  • Is my king safe after the move?
  • Does the move leave a piece or pawn undefended?
  • What checks, captures, and threats does it allow?
  • Did I calculate from the correct final position?

The final check should be quick. Its purpose is to catch simple consequences that your calculation skipped.

A shorter version for real games

You will not have time to recite a long checklist before every move. Reduce the process to five prompts:

What changed? What is threatened? What are my candidates? What is their strongest reply? Is my final move safe?

Spend more time on the process in critical positions: when there are forcing moves, when the pawn structure changes, when you are about to commit material, or when several plausible plans compete.

Adapt the process to the mistakes you actually make

A generic checklist is only a starting point. Your game reviews should tell you which question deserves extra attention.

If you repeatedly miss loose pieces, add a deliberate scan of every undefended piece. If you see your own combinations but miss defensive resources, emphasize the opponent's forcing replies. If you freeze in quiet positions, spend more effort generating candidates based on piece improvement and pawn breaks.

Practise the process away from the clock

Choose a position from one of your games and write down your answers to the five prompts. Do not move the pieces immediately. Compare two candidates, predict the opponent's response, and only then check the position with an engine.

Slow practice builds a sequence you can later compress during play. The goal is not to think slowly forever. It is to make the useful questions automatic.
