Getting better at chess is rarely about finding one perfect course, book, opening, or tactics app. Improvement comes from a feedback loop: you make a decision, see what the decision missed, and adjust the way you think before the next similar decision.
That sounds simple, but many improving players never complete the loop. They play a game, check the engine, see a red mistake marker, and move on. They learn which move was better without learning what they should have noticed before playing their move.
Build a feedback loop, not a pile of study material
A useful training routine has four connected parts: playing, reviewing, targeted practice, and repetition. Each part should answer a different question.
- Play: What decisions do you actually struggle with?
- Review: Why did your reasoning break down?
- Practice: What skill would make that decision easier?
- Repeat: Can you remember the lesson in a new game?
If your routine contains only puzzles, you may improve at recognizing prepared tactical positions without improving the decisions that create those positions. If it contains only games, you may repeat the same mistakes without isolating them. The parts work best together.
1. Play games that give you enough time to think
Fast games are fun and can be useful, but they often make it difficult to tell whether a mistake came from your chess understanding or from having almost no time. Include some games in which you can pause, identify candidate moves, and test your opponent's response.
You do not need to stop playing blitz. You need a portion of your games to produce decisions worth reviewing. One thoughtful game can teach you more about your process than several games you barely remember.
2. Review your reasoning before asking for the answer
Before turning on an engine, revisit the moments where you felt uncertain, surprised, or suddenly worse. Ask:
- What was I trying to achieve?
- Which reply did I expect?
- Which candidate moves did I consider?
- What changed after my move?
Writing down even one sentence helps. It preserves the reasoning that produced the move. When you later compare it with engine analysis, you can investigate the difference between your model of the position and what was actually happening.

3. Focus on one important decision
A game can contain many inaccuracies. Trying to study all of them at once usually produces a long list with no clear priority. Start with one serious, understandable mistake that changed the game and can teach a reusable lesson.
The best lesson is not always “calculate more.” It might be: check your opponent's forcing replies before committing, notice which pieces become undefended after an exchange, or compare at least two candidate moves before choosing the first attractive idea.
4. Turn the explanation into a trigger
A general conclusion such as “I need to concentrate” is difficult to use during a game. A concrete trigger is easier to remember:
Before I play a move that changes the position, I will check my opponent's checks, captures, and direct threats.
This is the bridge between analysis and improvement. You are not memorizing the correct move from one position. You are changing what you look for in future positions.
5. Use tactics to support mistakes from your games
Tactics remain essential. The difference is that your games can tell you what to train. If you repeatedly miss back-rank ideas, overloaded defenders, or intermediate moves, choose practice that reinforces those patterns instead of solving a random mix forever.
Pattern recognition helps you generate candidates, but it should sit inside a broader chess thinking process. You still need to test whether the pattern works in the current position.
A realistic weekly chess improvement routine
For a player around 600–1400, a sustainable week might look like this:
- Play two or three games with enough time to form real plans.
- Review each game yourself before checking an engine.
- Study one important mistake from each game, not every small dip.
- Practice tactics connected to patterns you actually missed.
- Write one short thinking habit and use it in the next game.
Add opening or endgame study when your own games show that it is the current bottleneck. Do not let a generic study schedule replace the evidence coming from your play.
How to tell whether the plan is working
Rating is noisy in the short term. Look for earlier signals: you notice an opponent's threat before it lands, you generate more than one candidate move, or you catch the same kind of mistake that you missed last week.
